This scanner offers a wide range of functions for $299. It does a very acceptable job with photos, after scanning about 250 documents, I have had no paper jams. The duplexing is great for two sided scans, however ther is some bleed throgh when scanning with the adf when there is print on both sides. I solved this problem by choosing the option to scan to word and then using the picture toolbar to brighten.

I have found the basic scanning software very easy to use. I use omnipage pro as my ocr software and my first ocr scan with the 5590 was perfect.

For $299 you can put up with a few irritations, but at this point I really haven't found any.

I have read through all the reviews listed below and I must say I am very surprised by all the negative comments. I purchase a refurbished scanner for use at work. It arrived in its original box with the software and other accessories still sealed in the original packaging. I installed the software with no problems. I have used to the scanner to scan voluminous textual documents utilizing the OCR software so they can be redrafted in Word and it is as close to perfect as I could have hoped for. I also use it to scan documents into .pdf format for delivery via e-mail and permanent storage and again achieved beautiful results. In the last month or so that I have been using this scanner, the software has not locked up on me, nor has the feeder jammed or any similar problem. It did take a little time for me to master the various software features, but I can't complain about that. I'm not sure why others are having such issues, but I am very happy with mine. I should note, I DO NOT use this scanner for photographs. (I have a Canon photo scanner for that.)
Great scanner!!

I bought my 5590 3 weeks ago. Since then, I have scanned over 5,000 pages, half of which were double-sided, and about 10% have been scanned in colour. Most are A4 in size, but there have been some mixed size batches of pages. Almost all the output has been to searchable PDF files, with the rest to jpg picture files. The quality of all scans has been excellent. I have had about 10 jams in that time, but most of those were my fault - left a few staples in! I have nothing but praise for this scanner. The setup on my XP computer was simple and worked first time. The interface is great. The OCR program that is supplied with the package - Readiris V8 (not the latest version) - works superbly to produce the searchable PDF files for Adobe Acrobat Reader. It is fast enough for me - my timeline is not critical. It is not intrusively noisy. So it has all been good for me.
Works great so far!

I am an amateur historian and genealogist, the HP Scanjet 5590 is one of the best investments I've ever made. The scanning quality is superb and the document feeder has worked perfectly so far.
AMAZING!

All I can say is WOW. And I mean WOW! Where do I start... well first of all I had no problem hooking it up which is nice. I downloaded the drivers and software off hp website instead of using the cd because I always want to get the latest versions. I was iffy about buying this thing because of the reviews but I mean I almost cried when I used it and saw how much time it saved me. I run a business out of my house, insurance to be exact, and I each application I write has about 10 or so pages give or take. Usually I dreaded scanning the pages and have actually been putting it off for a long time because it would take so long for with my old flat bed scanner naming this page flipping it over etc etc. I would use spend long nights doing it with a glass of brandy. I hooked this thing up and with the automatic feeder and the ability to default it to .pdf like the company prefers and even the ability to scan front and back without having to do anything extra accept have a box checked is amazing. I literally just finished scanning two policies in less than 5 minutes and took the time to get up and go tell my wife how happy I was during the time. I have done several policies since then and have not had a single problem with the auto feeder like most people have, maybe I am just lucky. Or maybe it is because I only put about 10 sheets in at a time I not sure how many the other people are putting in but I absolutely love this scanner. It is my second favorite business item I have now next to GPS. I don't even want to think about business life without either one of those things.
