Dynamic Little Powerhouse

I got the Epson WorkForce Pro GT-S50 scanner because of my needs in copying oversize contracts and prospectuses that I have to deal with and one of the great things about this machine is the ability to copy 8.5 X 36 inches long,YES let me repeat that... UP TO 36 INCHES LONG!!!

After dealing with several different scanners over the past 12 years and the limitations in copying the longer than 12-inch contracts & prospectuses that come up, it's a joy to copy the 14 inch long contract that was impossible till getting this machine and the picture quality is great,I did my scans at 600 dpi and it looked perfect.

Another feature that comes with the GT-S50 that is totally new to me is the ability to copy both sides of the documents at the same time and it does it so fast and perfectly.

It took about 5 minutes to download the 2 discs that came with the Scanner and it was ready to go without any problems.

In the past every scanner I've had was bigger than one would hope for and this beautiful little powerhouse folds up when not being used into an incredibly small dust resistant unit and I really am pleased with it.

This machine is a real winner.
A very sweet, very capable machine.

I bought my first OCR (Optical Character Recognition)machine in the mid-1980s. As I recall, it cost me about $15,000 and was about the size of a washer/dryer combination. It was slow, prone to jamming and the results were mediocre.

Twenty years later the breadbox sized GT-S50 puts that first machine totally to shame. It took only a few minutes to install the necessary software on a computer running Windows Vista Home Premium (64 bit). Another few seconds to drop in a stack of 79 pages (a little over the specified 75 page limit of the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)). A couple of mouse clicks to select the desired output format and folder and one more click to start scanning.

This machine is blisteringly fast, operating at least at the 25 pages per minute specification. The ADF feed is very smooth. A couple of pages had "chads" where I removed staples and a couple of pages were slightly crumpled, but the GT-S50 kept right on plowing along. Image output is buffered, so the paper feeding part finishes before the conversion to images occurs. The Abby FinePrint Reader works somewhat slowly, but it is acceptably accurate. I did not try the supplied Nuance PaperPort 11SE software because my experience with the last couple of versions has been bad. I will be using it with Adobe Acrobat in the future and I have no doubt that it will work because Epson has included both TWAIN and ISIS drivers.

There is a fairly broad array of options for scanning text and images. The menu driven scanning software is simplistic and, I think, idiot proof. There are numerous output quality options with little guidance on which to use, which may lead some beginners astray. The menu is in some ways simplified to too great a degree. It is not immediately clear, for example, how to designate your output folder or how to change the default name of the output file.

In terms of performance, the GT-S50 is built for business needs. It is far superior to the common multi-function machines found in many home and small offices. Setup, as noted, is very fast and very easy.

The machine itself is very well designed. The output tray slides into the main body and the ADF tray folds over the top, serving as a dust cover. While small, the machine is fairly heavy, though you can "lug" it from location to location without difficulty.

In all, this is one very sweet machine. It is fast, simple to operate, delivers high-quality results, moderately portable and apparently built to last. It will handle not only regular sized paper, but business cards, odd-sized items in a separate carrier sheet and items 8.5 inches wide and up to 36 inches long.

Anyone familiar with professional document scanning software will instantly realize that not every bell and whistle is provided. Far from it: the included software covers the basics and not much more. But the fact is that most people will not miss all the capabilities supplied in professional scanning software.

I am very impressed and hope to quickly convert the contents of my filing cabinets to PDF files in the near future with the able assistance of the Epson WorkForce Pro GT-S50 Document Imaging Scanner. It is a very slick, very useful, very sweet machine.

Reviewer: javajunki,
If you are like most small business owners the idea of a paper-less office has been a great concept but failed to live up to the reality for one simple reason...who has the time to sit around and scan papers all day? I know I don't...which is one reason I have years of paper work sitting in filing cabinets in several different rooms. Every few years I go through the time consuming task of sorting through old copies in a rather futile attempt to make space for incoming "must keep" items. When this item came up for review I jumped at the opportunity. I'll skip to the important part...jump on this little gem if you need a fast, easy scanner. Here's the breakdown...

Fast. Did I mention fast? It's such a tremendous improvement over others you won't even want to put it into the same category. Like others, I've owned several scanners in the past...all considered decent in their own day but always slow and unpractical. Never having been satisfied, I more or less gave up a few years ago and went with a multi-function machine that does everything...albeit not so well. However, this dedicated scanner reminds you why it's better to own one machine that gets the job done right - for those with an occassional need for scanning this might be over-kill but for small business owners, those with a home office or even a small general purpose office this is a "must have". Best of all, it's small enough to not take up space like the massive multi-purpose laser printer. Small and fast.

Easy to set up. Other reviewers have covered this in detail so I won't repeat it here but will only add that this was quick and easy to install for both XP and Vista machines. Seamless, no conflicts and was up/running in minutes.

Double-sided (fast!) scanning. Another reviewer mentioned the upside down tendency which I also encountered...it seems like there should be a work around although I've not found it yet. Not a big deal but a tad annoying just the same. Still, for my purpose it isn't a deal killer.

75 sheet feed is ample enough to handle most documents and the unit comes with "carry sheets" to use with odd sized receipts, crinkled items (a common problem when people shove the receipts into pockets) and other frequently encountered problems. Makes easy work of normal headaches.

Fits anywhere. I bring this up again because space is a premium and I was very pleasantly surprised by how compact yet well made this little machine felt. It folds up to practically nothing yet easily handles decent sized projects.

Clear results! Any scanner is only as good as the results and this was able to clearly scan everything from standard documents to grubby, wrinkled receipts with a clear output. Impressive!

Bottom line--GREAT little scanner!
This Thing ROCKS!

I can't even think if all the scanners that I have gone through in the past because I like/need to keep a digital copy of every single thing like bills, contracts, bank statements, photos, newspaper articles, virtually everything that I can think of that would be vital to keep around.

Anyways lets get to the actual review.

Installed and setup very nicely and easily and doesn't take up much more space that a regular printer.

This thing has scanned everything that I have thrown at it hands down. It even scans double sided and it is FAST FAST FAST!

In the past a scanning job that might have take an hour can be done in 5 minutes with this bad boy and that's no joke either.

I highly recommend this system to anyone that likes or needs to keep digital copies of stuff weather it be personal or business, you will love how much easier it makes the job.
Easy to use and excellent for scanning pictures

I've had this product for a few months now and could not be more pleased with it. I have used it for its main purpose - to scan in documents, business cards, receipts, etc- and it is an excellent little machine and very simple to use. It does duplex scanning (both sides of the paper at once), the software includes handwriting recognition and converts it into type (OCR) and also includes a Carrier sheet for scanning pictures.

What I am finding it most useful for, though, is for scanning in our many hundreds of family pictures that we have from before the arrival of digital cameras. Surviving only in hard copy (and most of them without negatives) it is finally easy to scan, email and share these pictures. I had tried using a flatbed scanner but it was tedious and time consuming. With this machine I can put all the pictures from an album into a neat little pile on the feeder and the machine scans them very very quickly. The owner's guide recommends using the Carrier sheet for scanning pictures but I have scanned hundreds without it and have not seen any signs of damage to the machine or to the pictures. I'm using Picasa to sort and load the pictures onto my computer and this part of the process does take a fairly long time. However, this may be an issue with Picasa and not the machine itself. The quality of the pictures is excellent even when I enlarge the pictures or zoom in.

Another thing I like about the machine is its small size. I currently have it set up on a closed cabinet in a book shelf. I open up the cabinet when I'm working and simply shut the doors when I am not.

The only downside I can think of is that the user's guide was not included in a hard copy form. I like to have a manual to flip through when looking for information but that may be since I am used to the old days of working from books. If you have no problem with going to the user's guide on your desktop, then this should not be an issue. Also, since it is fairly simple to use I only had to refer to the user's guide a few times.

So this is a handy little machine for home or office use and I very highly recommend it.
